Project V2O (CIVIS3i - H2020)

Project Vrbis to Orbis (V2O): uncovering the forgotten history and genetic past behind Valencia (Spain), from its birth as a Roman colony to the fall of Islamic madina and the rise of the modern city.

A dataset of 200 samples has been gathered to study the past populations and communities that inhabited the city of Valencia in its various iterations. The archaeological sites are detailed in the image above. The locations have been picked with the collaboration of the archaeological service and its extense body of work and documentation of the excavations that have been brought to light many over the last 50 years. The project is being developed between Sapienza University of Rome (Italy) and Stockholm University (Sweden) under the advisory supervision of Prof. Laura Parducci (Dipartamento di Biologia Ambientale) and Prof. Anders Götherström (Centre for Paleogenomics). This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement N°101034324.
